December 2022 - While we have been working on our reusable sandwich wrappers, we sometimes had to wait in order to use the sewing machines. We decided to use this time to make something useful and contribute to our goal of improving the environment we live in. That’s why we decided we could recycle paper to make beautiful fridge magnets. It has been really good fun. We roll the paper tightly and we shape it like a small snail or a fish using glue.

December 2022 -In order to minimise the amount of waste we generate, we have designed and created our own sandwich wrapper recycling old fabric. Our aim is to stop bringing our snacks wrapped in plastic and aluminium.

We have learned to cut the patterns and to stitch the different parts as well as to use the sewing machine. It has been a very hands-on experience that we love!

Our sandwich wrapper can be used everyday and will help us reduce the waste we generate at school. We hope to extend the initiative to the rest of the students of our school.

10 November 2022 - On Thursday we visited the Mazzamuto cave and the woods surrounding the cave. We took part in the Altavilla’s School project “Each child plants a tree”, so all of us planted a tree in the Mazzamuto area. We enjoyed the wonderful landscape and the rich flora of the island, which is threatened by forest fires in the summer.  Italian students explained about the plants and trees of this protected area.

After lunch, we visited the Town Hall and we met with the Mayor of Altavilla. We also visited an art exhibition of paintings done on tin, which was quite unique.

9 November 2022 - In the morning we met at the school and we learned about the UNESCO World Heritage Sicilian puppets. The “maestros” told us about how they are made and how to perform with them. We also saw a show, which was very interesting and entertaining.

Later, a local artist, Tommaso Provenzano, helped us create beautiful bookmarks that we could take home.

After that, we walked to a very well preserved Norman bridge called “Saracen Bridge”. Then, we went on walking until we reached the beach, where we stopped for lunch.

In the afternoon, we created international groups and we spent some time collecting rubbish on the beach. We worked hard and realised how much rubbish people leave behind…

In the evening, the host families took us on a boat ride to San Nicola. This was an exciting experience with amazing views of the Sicilian coast.

8 November 2022 - On our second day in Altavilla, we visited the primary school in the town. Later we had the schools’ presentations, our students presented the activities done on Waste Management. They did a great job!.

They learned from the other schools about environmental problems affecting the waters and shores of Sicily and Lithuania.

In the afternoon, we visited Cefalú. A picturesque town near Palermo. We had a wonderful time wandering around and eating delicious “gelato”.

This is our presentation on the actions we have taken at school to improve sustainability around us:

7 November 2022 - After receiving a very warm welcome from our host families yesterday; today, we have been welcomed by the school’s orchestra and traditional dances and we had a welcome ceremony in our honour.

After a break we learned how to recycle paper creating a photo frame and coasters using the paper quilling technique.

After lunch, they taught us the traditional dancing routines. We all tried, but it was more difficult than it looked.

Later we had a great evening with our new friends and host families.

29 October 2022 - We have visited Manresa’s Recycling Plant. We have seen the rubbish landfill sites and the compost production from organic waste as well as the separation process of all the recyclable waste. It has been very informative.

25 October 2022 - Today we have learned to recycle cooking oil to make soap. We have brought oil from home that we have used for cooking to create soap that we will be able to use, for example, to wash clothes.

We have added caustic soda and essential oil to turn our used oil into soap.

The oil that goes down the sink is very bad for the environment, as it pollutes the water and harms ecosystems.

Today we have learned how to reuse this oil to make something useful and help the environment at the same time.

18 October 2022 - This year, to celebrate the Erasmus day, we have created different posters to explain to people in the neighbourhood the need to use the recycling containers appropriately.

Around the school, we have found that sometimes people leave big objects like furniture and appliances next to the recycling bins, misusing the real purpose of these containers. We wanted to report and inform about the situation and for this, we have put up posters on the containers we have near the school.

We hope to see a difference in the use of the bins in the future

February 2022 - Our students have measured the waste generated by the school’s community within a week. With the collaboration of the cleaning staff, we have collected the waste from Monday to Friday with the purpose of having concrete quantities in kilograms of the organic waste, paper, plastics and cans and general rubbish.

With this exercise we have learned that there is much to do at school to improve the way we recycle and the way we consume. For the project this is a very important milestone from which  we want to see improvements.

January 2022 - Our students have worked on an advertising campaign targeting the entire school community to inform abour our project as well as change consuming habits and be greener in what they bring to school as a snack. We have posters, videos, padlets, articles, etc.

Here you have a sample:

November 2021- To be able to manage the organic waste at school and use our brand new composter correctly, we need everyone’s collaboration. To that end, our students have prepared presentations to go to all the classes at school to tell all the other students about how the organic waste is going to be managed, and to ask for their collaboration during the break, as it is the moment when most of the waste is generated.

Students have explained how the composter will be managed and where and how to use the organic waste bins at the playground.

October 2021 - One of the first activities in the project has been the composter. We have been given the composter by the “Centre de recursos del Bages”. We had someone coming and helping set it all up; but from now on it is our responsibility to collect the organic waste generated daily in the playground and pour it into the composter. In a few months, we will hopefully have great compost for the school's plants.

We are excited, as this is a challenge for us: we will be responsible for managing the organic waste at the school.

22th of April 2022 - On Earth Day, 1st and 2nd graders from FEDAC Manresa have cleaned the area around the river Cardener (near our school). After a delicious hot chocolate to gain energy, we have picked up rubbish which we have separated to then dispose of it in the appropriate containers. It has been fun to help the environment.

We are very proud!
